News From The Centres
SCOTLAND

The Scottish centre is continuing to thrive with the next Certificate beginning in March with the intake at 20 so far. Congratulations to the 22 students who passed their Certificate exam last December, many of whom are continuing their studies on our Diploma Course, which began in January 2001. It is going well with, 34 students enrolled.

We have had a great commitment from our supervisors once again and they are due our many thanks for the support they continue to give. The Scottish team is continuing to grow with Angela at the helm as Principal in Scotland and lecturer, Graham Watts lecturing and supervising, Claire Murdoch, Linda Alexander and Jo Nicholson supervising and Clare Walker as administrator. Jo has also produced a series of self-help tapes for The National Phobics Society. (See photo below. Left to right: Jo, Linda, Graham and Clare).

To encourage those of you working within the N.H.S. to pursue funding, here are some of our recent success stories.

Betty Campbell is a nurse on our current Diploma Course and was funded through both the Certificate and Diploma courses. She had great support from her department consultant who encouraged her to approach the finance office. Betty recalls all she required was “a little bit of persistence and some proof of our demand for it and its effectiveness, which wasn’t difficult to do.”

Colin MacPherson is also one of our current Diploma students and his story echoes Betty’s in that all he had to do was ask. He approached the financiers by letter and was called for a meeting where he was able to explain how hypnotherapy training would benefit a great number of his patients where he works in the Community High Dependency Unit. Colin says: “The Education Department is keen to use their budget for furthering their personnel’s education, all they ask is that you can justify your chosen field of study and its relevance to your particular area of care.”

Winnie Allison, also currently on the Diploma course, is another story of success in gaining funding, this time from The Millennium ‘Help The Hospices’ Lottery Funding programme. When she applied the only criteria was that the course had to be in the Complementary Therapy sector and the training had to be of benefit to the Hospice’ patients and its staff. Winnie says: “Despite a very involved application the effort was undoubtedly worthwhile.”

Aren’t these wonderful acknowledgements of the LCCH standards to see that the N.H.S. is becoming more and more supportive of their staff who wishe to pursue this type of training.

It was great to see so many faces, old and new at the recent “Step By Step” weekend Masterclass in Glasgow. There was a great turn-out as you can see from our group photo and Past met with Present when we caught Uri with David Taylor, a former student who trained with Angela 14 years ago, and Dr. Rory Melville who is currently studying on our Diploma course.
David commented that he felt his training was “very worthwhile and felt inspired to make a career out of Hypnotherapy” and he has done just that, working as he does on a full-time basis. However, he feels that regular training in the form of Masterclasses keeps him grounded. He says “the journey in my learning is never ending,” so finds attending the Masterclasses brings increasing value to his practice. He has taken many of his skills from his training into a business environment and works with numerous companies applying his knowledge of stress management and staff development.

Rory is a Medical Doctor who is at present an in-house officer in Care of the Elderly and says he is finding that the course material has great relevance to all aspects of his work. He explained, “I have a large client base of elderly patients who are very open and receptive to Hypnotherapy, and my colleagues also benefit from the skills I have learned so far.” He feels that his continued study will bring him more clinical acumen to further enhance his future career.
