NEWS FROM THE CENTRES
MANCHESTER

Jane Bannister, Course Co-ordinator for the North West, writes:

We have a flourishing Centre here in Manchester, running several courses a year. We welcome students from any part of the country to come and visit us in our very comfortable surroundings, at the Postgraduate Centre of Manchester Royal Infirmary.

We also run many LCCH Masterclasses in Manchester and are always pleased to see people who trained with other organisations joining us for these special days. I would like to thank all those hypnotherapists who contacted me after my Weight Loss and Psychoneuroimmunology Masterclasses with reports of the good results they had achieved.

Some of the Weight Loss class attendees who were initially sceptical about an approach to weight loss which banned dieting are now convinced. An Irish Hypnotherapy Organisation for which I also presented the material had so many requests for the ‘Wall of Fat’ script that they have now re-printed it in their own magazine.

My own faith in this technique increased even more last week when one of my patients, formerly 18 stone, told me she has lost so much weight with the ‘never diet again’ hypnosis that she can now get two legs down one leg of a pair of jeans she used to wear previously.

As some of you may know, I have been working with anorexics and bulimics for the past thirty years. One of my patients appeared on a television chat show last year with five other anorexic girls. When the producers wanted to do an update the following year, the other five girls were still hospitalised whereas my patient was a very pretty and happy eight and half stone, and showing off her curves in a bikini.

I am always happy to talk about eating disorders to other professionals and can be contacted on : 01458-861 151.

Carole Gray, a former LCCH student, suffered badly from lupus for several years. Using some of the techniques from Psychoneuroimmunology, she decided to treat the lupus with hypnotic visualisation. She has made such an improvement in her condition that her Consultant told her recent tests show her blood proteins have returned to normal, and she no longer needs to see him for three monthly check-ups.

Carol runs a support group for people with lupus and would be glad to hear from anyone looking for advice on hypnotic strategies for lupus on: 01253-344 238.

Margaret Cook, an LCCH supervisor in Manchester, tells us of an interesting case of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. A man, who has been hospitalised because of depression, was obsessed by what he thought was the ugliness of a specific line on his face. Margaret treated him very successfully using a combination of hypnotic strategies including psychodrama.
Colleagues needing advice for treating BDD are welcome to contact Margaret on : 0161-773 9785.

Dr Rubin Battino is coming to Manchester on 12-13 May to present his two-day Masterclass. Dont miss it!

British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy - Lectures

During the first part of this year the Vice Principal of the LCCH, Ursula James, has been travelling around the UK promoting the use of hypnotherapy in various hospitals, colleges and other pschyotherapeutic organisations. The first of these involved a series of lectures to members of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

The initial lectures consisted of a one-day workshop entitled ‘An Introduction to Hypnotherapy in the Counselling Setting’ and included an exercise designed specifically for counsellors, the ‘Inner Offload’. The workshop was developed as part of a series of lectures designed to put the use of hypnotherapy into context for varying sections of the healthcare professions. Ursula said of the counsellors who attended: “The level of skills of those attending was consistently high, and feedback forms suggested they left the day with more questions than answers.”

Some of the attendees are now enrolled on the LCCH’ Certificate Course - and she wishes them every success in incorporating hypnotherapy skills into their profession.

Other lectures include talks to Medical and Dental practitioners, psychologists and psychotherapists, as well as those who work within high trauma professions, such as social services, police and A&E staff. These are presented UK wide. If you know of an organisation who would benefit from a lecture of this type, please contact Ursula on:
Ujames1@aol.com or 020 7402 9037.

BIRMINGHAM

Congratulations to those students who passed the recent Certificate Exam at UCE, Birmingham. We look forward to seeing them all on the forthcoming Diploma Course.

With an eye on continuing professional development for the LCCH itself, we are delighted with the innovative methodology of supervision developed by Paul Bradshaw, a Birmingham graduate. Paul, as an aid to the LCCH’ comprehensive supervisory system, also offers extra support material taken from relevant sources. Some of this material includes suggested treatment protocols in consolidated forms as well as support and encouragement for students to develop and prepare their own treatment plans.

The supervision is backed-up by the setting up of E Groups, where, under the guidance of the supervisor, students can communicate with each other electronically and download material to provide further learning.

The LCCH is now reviewing its existing supervisory structure to explore ways in which Paul’s system could be usefully adopted nationwide. Watch this space.
