Changes interview:

We are delighted to hear that you will be running workshops on guided imagery and other approaches to healing in London and Manchester in May. Tell us, how did you get started doing workshops?

Rubin: The two-day workshop that I will be running grew out of my involvement as a volunteer leader in the Bernie Siegel inspired Charlie Brown Support Group for Exceptional Patients in Dayton, Ohio. I also work individually on a voluntary basis with people who have life-challenging diseases.

What do you cover in your workshop?

Rubin: A thorough study of the nature of guided imagery for healing. This includes: language usage, rapport building, the nature of imagery and metaphor, the analysis of imagery transcripts, and the creation and delivery of guided imagery. A distinction is made between disease which is the physical manifestation, and illness which is the socio-cultural way in which the disease is viewed.

Cures apply to diseases, and healing applies to illness. The scientific basis for this work is first established by a study of Psychoneuroimmunology, David Spiegel's research, and the placebo effect. Dealing with unfinished business is considered in some detail since it is so important in the healing process. The role of rituals and ceremonies is discussed and illustrated. Using guided imagery to prepare people for surgery and other invasive procedures is also described. Since hopes and dreams are important in terms of finding meaning in life (in Viktor Frankl's and Lawrence LeShan's sense), this area is also explored.

Where do you take your material from?

Rubin: The basic text for this material is mine; there are also tapes available for illustrative work. The workshop is experiential – there are demonstrations and opportunities for the participants to practise some of the presented material. I have developed two useful imagery approaches to healing and they are called: "Healing via Bonding," and "Healing via Fusion." These approaches will be discussed and at least one demonstrated. My approach is based on my experience as an Ericksonian therapist and hypnotherapist.

What do you most enjoy about running a workshop and what do you think the participants gain most from it?

Rubin: I really love to teach and to share what I know. I also enjoy learning from the participants, especially when they ask challenging questions! This is particularly true of my chosen work with people who have life-challenging diseases. This work can be tough at times, but getting to know and share in the lives of the remarkable people I have met is more than sufficient reward. It has been my dream for some time to be able to teach others how to do this work. The participants will gain from learning in an experiental way and by the end of the course they will have learned to design and deliver a guided image.

The cost of the two-day workshop is £140-00 plus VAT (£120-00 plus VAT for LCCH students, BSCH members and EJCH subscribers).
