AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE USE OF HYPNOTHERAPY IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC ECZEMA

As the recent House of Lords report highlighted, there is a lack of high quality research showing the effectiveness of many complementary therapies including hypnotherapy. Whilst those people working in the field of hypnotherapy have many anecdotal reports of success in a variety of clinical situations, for hypnotherapy to be accepted as a useful therapeutic intervention, particularly by the medical profession, proper randomised case controlled trials need to be performed.

I am a Specialist Registrar in Dermatology at the General Infirmary in Leeds and am fortunate to have a Consultant colleague who is also interested in hypnotherapy. As you all know there is a clear link between the psyche and the skin and many external stressors worsen skin disease. We have both completed the Medical Diploma in Clincial Hypnosis and are about to start our research, beginning with a pilot study of 30 patients with chronic moderate to severe eczema. We are planning to have 4 sessions of hypnotherapy and will be teaching our patients self-hypnosis. If the pilot study is successful then a blind randomised controlled trial with a larger number of patients will be performed. We would be grateful for help from local LCCH trained hypnotherapy practioners for the randomised controlled trial, so please contact us at the address below.

The National Phobics Society (NPS)

The NPS Clinical Hypnotherapy Scheme was set up over three years ago with the BSCH. The scheme continues to be a great success. The NPS needs to recruit hypnotherapists in the following areas of the UK:

Northampton/Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Cumbria, Oxford, Bristol, Derbyshire, North and East London, Northern and Southern Ireland, Newcastle, Sheffield/South and Yorkshire.
Nicky Lidbetter of the NPS says: “We now have over 60 hypnotherapists working with the Society and the scheme is going extremely well. We have so much positive feedback from members who have seen the therapists. Many thanks for your help to-date”.

This is an excellent opportunity for qualified LCCH hypnotherapy practitioners to help NPS clients, raise the profile of clinical hypnotherapy and gain valuable clinical experience. There is a lot to gain.

If you are qualified and have an up-to date registration with the BSCH, then please contact:

A WEEKEND WITH DR RUBIN BATTINO

The LCCH is delighted to announce that Dr Battino will present two Masterclasses - London and Manchester - in May of this year.

Dr Battino, whose first book: Ericksonian Approaches: A Comprehensive Manual, is now required reading for LCCH students, will base his presentation on his second book, Guided Imagery.

This is a not to be missed opportunity for therapists and NLP practitioners to acquaint themselves with a variety of Dr Battino’s innovative approaches to healing. (See interview on page 4 and the enclosed booking form.)
