WORKING WITH DEPRESSION Peter Mabbutt |
| A vast majority of the population has experienced periods of depression at some point in their lives, and for most this is a transitory life experience that passes with no external intervention. However, for some, the depression may become entrenched and cannot be shifted because the patient develops inappropriate coping strategies. This is when external intervention becomes necessary. For many, the only help they receive is through pharmacological intervention, which by its nature will address the shift in mood, but has little, if any, effect on the cognitive factors. For this psychological intervention is required. The aim of this Masterclass is to provide practioners with a greater understanding of depression and the role hypnotherapy can play in its resolution. The Masterclass will look at the neurological and psychological aspects of the condition and definitions of the various types of depression that group together under the general headings of Reactive and Clinical Depression will be given. It is important for therapists to have an understanding of the processes the mind undergoes when confronted by life events. The way a persons mind processes these events will determine a functional or dysfunctional outcome that could lead to the development of a depressive state. Further to this, the coping strategies employed within the depressive state will determine whether it resolves itself naturally or will turn into a pathological condition requiring intervention. With this knowledge and understanding, therapists can help move the patient from the dysfunctional and provide a route back to a normal life. |

WORKING WITH TRAUMA & PTSD Linda Hudson |
| The subject of Traumatic Stress Reaction and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has become more recognised in recent years and yet is sometimes still a matter of controversial debate; some refute its existence, others think the label is too easily applied allowing victims to engage in long drawn out legal battles for vast amounts of compensation. This Masterclass will provide definitions according to the DSM 1V but will not attempt to prove or otherwise the definitive existence of PTSD. It will assume that individuals come for hypnotherapy because they are suffering from a collection of debilitating symptoms from which they want relief. They may present to you in private practice or you may be working in conjunction with a trauma clinic or hospital. In either case it is vitally important that the therapist has a clear background knowledge of likely symptoms and an expectation of their duration. Clients may present in the consulting room soon after the trauma or years later still suffering from a variety of symptoms which prevent them from leading a normal life. The Masterclass will discuss techniques and scripts designed to give relief from symptoms and allow sufferers to take up their normal lives again. |
