Forgotten Registration?

Just a few words to remind any members who have been meaning to register as practising this year but have forgotten to do so, there is still time. Even though the registration year is now entering its second half it is still worth making the effort, particularly as the society is placing additional adverts in the national media this year, which should alert extra customers to your services. If you do send in a £15.00 cheque for registration remember to include with it a photocopy of your indemnity insurance policy.

Insurance Question

Member, Joyce Newberry, has raised an interesting point regarding insurance. Most house insurance policies will protect you against damages if someone injures themselves in your home. However, this might not be the case if you are using your home in a business capacity at the time of the injury (and many hypnotherapists work from their own home).

This particular ‘fine print’ is likely to differ from one insurance company to another so it may be wise to check your policy before any mishap takes place. You may find that you are still covered, or perhaps need to take a small amount of additional cover to insure for business usage.

Stress Awareness Day

Many thanks to member, Barry Thain, for alerting us to the fact that Wednesday, November 6th, is 'National Stress Awareness Day'. As he points out - this is an opportunity to bring our stress-busting services to the attention of the general public via the media. I know that Barry is planning to do a day of free consultations but there are many other possibilities that can be utilized. Perhaps a day teaching self-hypnosis or other relaxation techniques, either one to one or in a group setting might be suitable. Maybe a small charge could be made for your services that could be donated to charity? The press love this kind of thing and will no doubt give some kind of coverage to your efforts.

If a BSCH therapist is going to do something special for National Stress Awareness Day they should certainly inform their local press and also inform the Organising Secretary of the society or Avy Joseph (the Press and Media Secretary) who may then be able to use his persuasive talents with some of the national press people. After all 'an inch in the news is worth a page of advertising'.

Wonder Web

A comparison of Internet statistics between the last complete month of this year (September) and the same month last year showed a surprising result for the number of people visiting the BSCH web site. While many ‘dot coms’ have complained that the initial surge of interest in the world wide web has begun to slow down, the number of hits on our web site has doubled! This is borne out by the fact that e-mails are now one of the main sources of enquiry.

Newcomers to the Society may be pleased to learn there is a web page design offer available to members, enabling them to have a professionally designed web page hosted from the BSCH web space. The cost is just £25.00 and the page remains ‘live’ while ever the member remains registered. Further details from the Secretary.

Therapists who have more than one practice, in different regions, can now place additional addresses in the searchable Internet database, thus helping customers to find their services.

Specialization

As secretary, I answer quite a range of queries from customers looking to find the right hypnotherapist to help them with a particular problem. More and more over the past year I have been asked to recommend hypnotherapists who specialize in dealing with particular presenting problems.

This is especially evident after an ailment has had some media coverage where hypnotherapy was recommended as beneficial. For example, I had a number of calls from people looking for hypnotherapists who specialize in the treatment of trichotillomania after member, Veronica Witter, was shown dealing with the condition on a BBC television programme. Other typical requests are for cancer care, eating disorders, hypnosis for children, pain management and pregnancy / birth issues, to name just a few.

Naturally, members of this Society will be able to approach most problems with a good deal of confidence, but, where a special effort has been made to research and excel in a treatment, I think it would be a good idea if I had this information. I could then be of better service to the public and Society members alike.

If you feel that you have developed a specialist knowledge or approach to a problem please pass this information on to the Secretary.

Next year, with the registration reminder forms, I may include a returnable slip so that specialties can be catalogued and perhaps some space can be made for them on the searchable Internet database.

On the Move?

Are you thinking about moving location but haven’t made up your mind yet where to go? It may be an idea to move to an area where there are very few, or perhaps even no other practising hypnotherapists.

One idea is to call the Organizing Secretary who can let you know who is active in a particular region, or you can log on to the Internet and search the Society’s online database by city or county. Our UK coverage is good but there are still a few gaps in the net.
