NEWS FROM MANCHESTER

Maurice Sterndale, Course co-ordinator for N W of England, writes:

The seasoned therapists amongst us will remember what it was like taking those first steps into practice. In the interest of continuing support, I am trying to put together a national list of affordable premises that newly qualified therapists can rent on an ad hoc basis. I have located some suitably furnished rooms in the north of England that are available to rent at a reasonable price, on an hourly or one-and- a-half hourly basis, and one will also take the bookings for a nominal fee. If anyone knows of any premises that can be rented by the hour or indeed if there are certain days that you don't use your own consulting rooms and would consider renting them out, I would be happy to pass this information on to interested parties.

Purple Partnership

Helen Reuben and Chris Richmond, two former LCCH students, recently joined forces to form the 'Purple Tree', a centre unique in offering individuals and organizations a range of support services. These include Hynotherapy, Life Coaching, Mentoring, Career Management, Reiki, and NLP. They also deliver workshops on Creative Relaxation, Confidence Building, Personal Development for Women, Motivation, Positive Thinking, Career Transition and Counselling skills in the workplace.

Helen and Chris, both previously self-employed, had discussed the possibility of working together during their diploma training two years ago. Chris said: 'We both realized the right location would be important and when we saw the Centre and its situation we felt it would be right.’ The Centre, located in the Wirral, consists of a large well-equipped training room, consulting rooms and spacious office accommodation, and there is a network of therapists and counsellors based there who work with Helen and Chris.

Marketing a business that is so diverse as this is a challenge on its own, and the girls feel effective networking will be key to the success of ‘Purple Tree.’ In addition to Hypnotherapy, the two former students combine a wide selection of skills and experience in Business and Employee Support, Management Development, Counselling, Group Facilitation and Career Management. Helen commented:

“Chris' background and skill base is different from my own, but we have similar values and a healthy respect for each other; all this combined meant we felt we could be successful in a very competitive market”.

Helen and Chris would welcome discussion with other specialists, and for more information contact Helen Reuben on

Phobic Society

Several Manchester students have recently registered as volunteer hypnotherapists with the Phobic society to gain valuable experience. Should any student or newly qualified therapist be interested in gaining experience in this way, you will need to:-
  • Make sure your insurance is up to date.
  • Make sure you include your BSCH membership number, as this shows that you abide by a code of practice that the Phobic Society approve of.

You will also need a referee, preferably your supervisor or area co-ordinator. The address to write to is:

Ms Nicky Lidbetter, The Phobic Society, Zion CRC
Stretford Road, Hulme, Manchester M15 4ZY.

Sonya Wadsworth
Congratulations to Manchester student, Sonya, on gaining an award from the HypnoBirth Institute of Arizona, USA, in recognition for her contribution to HypnoBirthing in the UK.

I completed the LCCH Certificate course in Birmingham, and was amazed at the scope of practice within Clinical Hypnotherapy. Reading the LCCH newsletter eagerly as it arrived each time, I realized that, because of the broad spectrum within Hypnotherapy, practitioners specialized in a particular area. I wondered how on earth do you decide what to specialize in? I asked my supervisor and he told me it would just happen, something will lead you into a specialist area, but equally it is fine if you have a broad-based practice.

In October 2001, I had a conversation with a friend who was an Obstetrician at my local hospital, she asked me how hypnosis could be used in childbirth. I explained about relaxation and pain control. I did some research on the Internet and found there was a HypnoBirthing Practitioner Course in St. Louis, USA. After undertaking the course, I returned from the USA eager to use my new skills and my first client gave birth to a baby girl on December 19th, 2001. Since then I have had a further 42 babies to date, with several still in the pipeline as it were! During 2002 I have also become a Certified Labour Companion/Doula. This enables me to support a woman during the birthing of her child and I also know what to do if the baby arrives before the midwife. (I've seen James Herriot!)

In September, I was back in Phoenix, Arizona, for the HypnoBirthing Conference where I was asked to give a workshop on natural inductions for labour. It dawned on me that perhaps I have found my specialization, so yes Maurice, you were right: "it just happened".
