  1. Is there word counting software that skips references and citations?

Yes, but the policy of not counting in-text citations was reversed on 16 Feb 2010. Here is at least one free option for Windows systems... (Click here to install the .net framework if requested to do so during the installation). NB The pilicy is that in-text citations are included in the word-count.

  2. Are references/citation in the text of our essay counted in the word count or can they be disregarded?

The references/citation in the text of your essays are excluded from the word count, and therefore should be disregarded. This policy was been reversed by Tod Cury on 16 Feb 2010.

  3. Should I put my name on my assignment?

No. You should include your LCCH student number, your TVU student number, your course number and your course name.

  4. What is synthesis? Do I have to come up with my own unique and new theories?

Here's one view. Click here... Essentially, "...synthesis is a written discussion that draws on two or more sources. In writing a synthesis, you infer relationships between sources, both written and non-written." Here's another view Click here...

There are two forms of synthesis - "Explanatory" and "Argument"

    • Explanatory synthesis draws upon multiple sources of information in order to allow readers to understand a topic objectively, or
    • Argument synthesis draws upon multiple sources of information in order to present your own perspective or theory in a logical and objective manner.

Therefore you do not have to develop a new theory but you can if you wish to.

  5. Can I ask my tutor to review and comment upon my assignment?

Of course! Perhaps book a tutorial purely for that purpose. You should also refer to the marking grid provided in your weekend 1 notes to ensure that you are on track.

  6. Can I get an assignment extension?

This depends on the situation. A form is available for download from the TVU site. The form needs to be completed and submitted for consideration to your LCCH centre organiser or LCCH head office in the case of London based courses.

  7. Why does it take so long for assignment results to be released?

Assignments need to go through an external moderation process to ensure that marking is consistent and fair.

  8. Why do I need to send my assignment via eMail as well as submitting a printed copy?

The LCCH now has access and uses TurnitinUK plagiarism detection software and all student submissions are subject to checking. The LCCH will take action along with the University on any student caught breaching the General Regulations.

  9. Can I submit my assignment electronically?

You should submit your assignment in printed form AND send via eMail to submissions@lcch.co.uk

  10. How long does it take to get results back?

Allow at least 8 weeks. If there are significant delays every effort will be made to provide marker feedback in advance of letting you know the result.
